Overview
UPS systems, welding equipment and industrial power converters share a common demand: reliable switching at high current, often continuously, in a package that is compact and cool. A UPS runs at load for long periods and must not fail, a welder pushes a high current through the power stage at high frequency, and an industrial converter must fit a small cabinet. A Semikron IGBT module meets all three needs: the half-bridge circuit builds a rectifier or an inverter, the chopper circuit builds a buck or boost stage, and the module sets the voltage class, the losses and the thermal design for the whole supply.
The UPS Power Stage
A double-conversion UPS rectifies the mains to a DC bus and then inverts it back to a clean AC output, and both stages are built from half-bridge IGBT modules. Because the UPS runs at load continuously, the conduction loss dominates and a low saturation-voltage chip is efficient; a matched SKYPER gate driver provides the isolation and the protection, and the short commutation loop of the module keeps the overshoot low. The module voltage class follows the DC bus, with a 1200 V part for a standard single-phase or three-phase UPS and a 1700 V part for a higher bus.
Welding and High-Current Supplies
A high-frequency inverter welder rectifies the mains, then drives a high-frequency transformer through a bridge or chopper switching at 20 to 40 kHz. The switching frequency shrinks the transformer dramatically compared with a line-frequency machine, and the IGBTs must tolerate the rapid current changes of the arc. A chopper module such as the SKM295GB066D, with its fast-and-soft CAL diodes, is well suited to this low-voltage, high-current duty, and the module thermal path keeps the junction cool under a high duty cycle.
Compact Converters
Industrial power supplies increasingly need high power density, and the SEMiX platform answers that need with a low 17 mm height, separated AC and DC terminals and press-fit contacts that let a driver mount on top. A converter built from SEMiX modules is smaller and simpler, and select half-bridge types include an integrated shunt for current measurement, which removes an external sensor and shrinks the design further. The short commutation loop also lowers the overshoot, which helps the EMC design.
Thermal and Reliability
A power supply that runs continuously must be thermally sound. Estimate the conduction and switching losses at the actual load, confirm the junction temperature at the worst-case ambient and choose the interface material and heatsink accordingly. A higher junction rating allows a smaller heatsink or more current for the same cooling. The BeiLuo FAE team helps with the module selection, the driver pairing and the thermal design.
Working With BeiLuo
Send the bus voltage, the current, the topology and the duty for a matched recommendation with stock and lead time. Because Semikron covers the module and driver family from one authorized channel, the whole power stage can come from one supplier with one import documentation set.
